At the same time that the women's movement was gaining strength, the gay rights movement was beginning to bring millions of gay men and lesbians out of the closet. A growing awareness of gay culture has since been felt in politics, religion, art, film, music, dance, fashion, television, and of course, medicine.
Although medicine is traditionally quite conservative in its approach to social change, more and more doctors have come out of the closet and established gay-friendly practices.
- Both the American Medical Association and the American Psychiatric Association have reversed their previous positions and no longer classify homosexuality as a disease.
- Insurance companies have been forced to stop redlining zip codes with heavily gay demographics.
- The National Library of Medicine has developed a website for Gay and Lesbian Health matters.
Gay physician groups on the Internet include:
Bay Area Physicians for Human Rights Gay and Lesbian Medical Association American Medical Student Association's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Health Action Committee Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered Health Science Librarians
