Increased Tourism

Following World War II, the strength of the dollar in foreign markets made it possible for Americans to travel abroad in large numbers. Some became sick while abroad and had to be treated overseas. Others brought parasites, infections, and other illnesses back home with them.
A new trend in medical tourism has developed in recent years in which patients travel to countries like India, Thailand, and Mexico (where surgeries cost far less than in most American hospitals).
