Whether a hospital's transcription is performed in-house or outsourced to an agency, the head of any transcription unit must function like an air traffic controller. Incoming dictation is routed to transcriptionists with a keen eye toward meeting the deadlines for turnaround time. The transcription supervisor must also make sure that the finished work product meets the standards set by the Medical Record Committee.
When questions arise concerning problems with dictation equipment, problems with missing reports, or problems with quality control, the transcription supervisor is the person to contact. This is the person who will most likely have access to the computer which runs the digital dictation system and be proficient at using the digital dictation system's software to track productivity.
