With more and more patients being referred to physicians within an HMO or PPO network, doctors who lack strong networking skills can wither on the vine. Most doctors can't afford to limit their practices to patients who only pay cash or whose co-payments may not be based on a bizarre matrix of rules and regulations. Networking involves a kind of gladhanding and politics which is not universally enjoyed.
